What A "Blank" Ought to Know Series
Cover Design

MEDIUM: InDesign, PhotoShop, Illustrator, Figma

Created in November 2024, the book cover started off as the class's third project called a Book Cover Design. In Typography I (DESN 615), the class created this project to learn more about type pairing. We have to develop up to three book covers with the same content and create it as a set. The design of the books was slightly different because it is going to be a series, but the content would still be the same. The covers should have consistent typefaces, compositions, and a color palette. We had to generate three types of rough covers such as handmade imagery, found photography, and abstract shapes. Out of all of the three rough book covers I developed; I decided to do handmade imagery to create the cover.

Our class ended up researching public domain books from Project Gutenberg to avoid copyright. While looking through the site, that when I saw created book titles such as What a Women Ought to Know, What a Young Husband Ought to Know, and What a Young Wife Ought to Know. I was lucky because it was really difficult to find interesting book themes on the website. Then, our class gathered together to make a mind map for the theme of their books. I mostly focus on designing my covers based on minimalism and tone.

I ended up using the typeface pairings Arno Pro for the book title and Colfax for the author's name. The title was bolded and the “Young Blank” were the only typical words that are big which emphasizes the meaning of the book series. The author's name is italicized and was input at the center-bottom of the design. I decided to create an imagery of the storytelling of the cover by creating outlining different shoes on Illustrator. Later, I imported the designed shoe on InDesign and created a checkered repetitive pattern around the whole book. I used pink, cyan, and yellow because they are typical triad colors and I want the cover to have a light tone. The cover was later expanded to have a spine and cover. I also created a mock-up through Figma of what the design looks like in an audiobook.
